Creating equitable educational spaces is my goal.
Whether teaching college courses, working with teachers, facilitating Safe Zone trainings and other professional development workshops, or conducting research, social justice informs everything I do.
I have a Ph.D. in Education from UNC-Chapel Hill (where I also completed a certificate in qualitative methods) and an M.A. in Folklore from the University of Oregon. Combined, my unique training in allows me to conduct in-depth analyses of marginalized or overlooked communities through critical lenses.
I have experience teaching middle school through graduate level students. I have taught courses in teacher education, critical theory, qualitative research, and Young Adult literature, both face to face and online. I am skilled at breaking down complex theories and concepts into easily-understood elements, showing students that these concepts give us lenses to describe our everyday experiences. My classroom is an interactive space where students work to create their own knowledge. This approach is present in my professional development workshops for K-16 teachers and administrators and participants leave programs ready to tackle the difficult work of social justice in educational spaces. My focus is intersectional LGBTQ+ populations, and I have conducted Safe Zone trainings and given talks on LGBTQ+ experiences as well as using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and intersectionality.
As a researcher, I have worked with K-12 schools on evaluation projects and conducted ethnographic research on social justice teaching. I can help your organization evaluate programs and teaching practices. I have also conducted content analyses and can assist in analyzing organization documents and policies for equitable practices. My research skill set also includes: research design, end-to-end research, interviews, focus groups, observation, survey design and dissemination, survey validation, and using qualitative coding software.
I love creating innovative curriculum, whether that is developing a course from scratch or creating lesson materials to accompany an existing project. I can help you identify and define your objectives and align these to assessments and learning standards from professional organizations or state education departments. While some find learning standards restrictive, I can show you the flexibility within these standards and how they can be read through a social justice lens.
I live with my partner, our toddler, and two cats in Essex Junction, VT.
